THURSDAY, JULY 9 FIELD TRIP: GAUDENZIA (WOODLAND) Residential Treatment & Behavioral Health 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m This highly interactive course will include an insider’s tour of the Gaudenzia (Woodland) Residential Treatment facility. What is it really like on the inside of residential drug treatment? How effective is residential treatment? How long does it take to complete an effective residential treatment experience? How do you determine who is amenable to residential treatment? What is aftercare and how important is it to a patient’s long-term success? How do you measure the success of short/long-term residential treatment? This course will address the role of the judge in approving and monitoring the success or failure of residential treatment, including in the context of 8-507 commitments. The principles of science that require “continuity of care and supervision” will be discussed and emphasized. It will enable judges to better understand and support defendants participating in residential treatment. Judges will see peer-to peer discussions about the experience of residential treatment and the management of the addicted individual during residential treatment, including the importance of aftercare. This course will examine the rights protected by the 5th and 6th Amendments and help the participant to understand the nuances of constitutional protections, ensuring that trials are fair, rights are upheld, and justice is properly served. Participants will gain insight to identify when an individual’s right against self-incrimination is invoked, and ensure that individuals are not forced to testify against themselves or waive that right without fully understanding the implications. Other topics will include the current state of the law regarding admissibility of statements, and right to counsel, highlighting the right in relation to interviews and identification procedures as well as determination of knowing, intelligent, and voluntary waiver of those rights. Carol Coderre THURSDAY, JULY 16 AI & Other Digital Evidence: A Demonstrative Workshop for Judges 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This interactive workshop explores the evolving challenges of digital evidence, with a particular focus on AI-generated content. Through a series of dynamic courtroom scenarios, attorneys Alicia Shelton and Michael Berman will conduct direct and cross-examinations of expert witnesses, presenting arguments both for and against the authenticity of AI-related evidence. Judges will engage in critical discussions, examining key takeaways from expert testimony and addressing the implications of emerging technologies in legal proceedings. Designed to provide practical insights into evidentiary considerations in the age of AI, this session equips judges with the tools to navigate complex authenticity disputes effectively.
