TUESDAY, JUNE 30 It is the Grass That Suffers: Child Abuse in Custody & Domestic Violence Cases D I & 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This course will cover the training that is required by Family Law Article Section 9-101.3. Judicial Officers will receive dynamic lectures from experienced therapists and psychological and neuropsychiological evaluators so they can better understand trauma and how it truly affects brain development and the overall health of children. Judicial Officers will then work with this understanding to learn ways to limit retraumatization of children who are most affected by a judicial decision in a domestic violence, custody or criminal proceeding. Judicial Officers will also learn concepts related to physical, mental and sexual child abuse, including how child abuse is investigated and how forensic interviews are conducted. Coordinator: Hon. THURSDAY, JUNE 18 Removing Barriers to Inclusivity, Justice, & Fairness D I & 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This class will identify barriers to inclusion, fairness, and equity in the courtroom related to gender identity, sexual orientation, disabilities, neurodivergence, immigration status and cultural diversity, with practical suggestions for making our courtrooms more welcoming and just and our rulings better informed. Coordinator: Hon. Cathy Serrette TUESDAY, JUNE 23 Law & Strategy to Achieve Equity Through Monetary Awards 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Through discussion of the facts and rule of law resulting from impact cases that have shaped marital property law, this course will explore issues of valuation, tracing, burden shifting, limits on court’s authority, equitable distribution considerations, permissible transfer of property, tax considerations, personal goodwill and other non-marital intangible property, and distribution of retirement benefits. This course is intended for students who have at least an intermediate level understanding of marital property law. Students may wish to first take Maryland Marital Property: A Primer.
