AUGUST 20 Serious Traffic for Circuit Court Judges with Hon. Carlos Acosta

TUESDAY, AUGUST 5 OFF SITE: UNIVERSITY OF BALTIMORE SCHOOL OF LAW Hot Topics in Family Law: Are we Learning Family Law from the Supreme Court of Maryland or the Real Housewives? 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This program is an interactive look at how we learn from and how the media influences our view of family law cases. We’ll look at classic and recent family law movies, reality shows (Real Housewives of Wherever), and Tik-Tok. The course will also focus on recent rulings of the Appellate Courts. Coordinator: Hon. THURSDAY, AUGUST 21 Mental Health First Aid: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention D I & 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. During the workday, judges frequently experience individuals who are suffering from mental health and/or substance abuse challenges. Mental Health First Aid teaches judges to identify and respond to signs of mental health and substance abuse challenges in adults. Furthermore, this program will teach the participants how to respond to these challenges through a mental health first-aid action plan. Coordinators: Hon. Danielle Mosley; Hon. Marina Sabett WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27 Ethics Issues for Orphans’ Court Judges 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. On and off the bench, Orphans’ Court judges encounter ethical issues on a regular basis. Let’s take a deeper dive into the Code of Judicial Conduct and the rules governing Judicial Disabilities and Discipline as pertains to the Orphans’ Court judge. Come explore ethical issues faced by judges in Maryland and Nationally. Coordinator: Tanya Bernstein, Esq.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 14 Advanced Child Support 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

This is a class intended for both the intermediate and well-seasoned judge/magistrate or a Title IV-D magistrate, with a particular focus on discussing difficult issues that arise in child support cases. Faculty will include magistrates from different sized jurisdictions to provide a broad perspective on such issues as: 1. UIFSA.

2. Modification/termination. 3. Voluntary impoverishment. 4. Best practices. 5. Self-support reserve. 6. Multifamily adjustment. 7. Statutory and case law update.

Special emphasis will be on particular issues that may arise more frequently before the Title IV-D magistrates. Coordinator: Mag. Timothy Thurtle
