THURSDAY, JULY 10 OFF SITE: UNIVERSITY OF BALTIMORE SCHOOL OF LAW Demystifying Juvenile Transfers, Waivers Juvenile transfers and waivers are frequently complex and involve many different disciplines. They combine law, psychology, and sociology into one hearing, with serious implications for youth, their families, and victims of crime. At times, the large volume of information presented and argued can be overwhelming, and the law constantly shifts. This course will remove the mysteries of juvenile jurisdictional movement and untangle the knotty issues that judges will face in confronting the many facets of this dynamic and important area of law. Coordinators: James Johnston, Esq.; and Youthful Offenders 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Intimate Partner Violence Assessment and Best Practices for Harm Reduction 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Join the discourse with a social worker and an advocate who is actively engaged in screening parties experiencing intimate partner violence. This course will include training on the neurobiological effects of trauma, how lethality assessments are administered, advocate engagement and safety planning, connecting litigants to domestic violence resources, and a discussion on best practices for judges and magistrates presiding over domestic violence matters. THURSDAY, JULY 1 FIELD TRIP: GAUDENZIA Residential Treatment and Behavioral Health 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
This highly interactive course will include an insider’s tour of the Gaudenzia Crownsville Residential Treatment facility. What is it really like on the inside of residential drug treatment? How effective is residential treatment? How long does it take to complete an effective residential treatment experience? How do you determine who is amenable to residential treatment? What is aftercare, and how important is it to a patient’s long-term success? How do you measure the success of short/long-term residential treatment? This course will address the role of the judge in approving and monitoring the success or failure of residential treatment. The principles of science that require “continuity of care and supervision” will be discussed and emphasized. It will enable judges to better understand and support defendants participating in residential treatment. Judges will see peer-to-peer discussions about the experience of residential treatment and the management of the addicted individual during residential treatment, including the importance of aftercare.
