Criminal Evidence 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
This course will review the latest developments (case law, statutory, technological) affecting the resolution of evidence issues in criminal trials and recurring issues and practical considerations in handling evidence issues in the courtroom. Michel Pierson THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 Balancing Act: Navigating Courtroom Management for Accessibility, Security, and Fairness D I & 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Balancing security in a courtroom with public access involves ensuring safety and order while upholding the principles of transparency and justice. It requires measures to prevent disruptions and protect participants while facilitating public observation and participation in legal proceedings. Effective courtroom management involves balancing these factors, promoting transparency, efficiency, and the equitable administration of justice. This course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of courtroom management principles. It focuses on ensuring accessibility, security, and fairness for all individuals involved in the legal process. Participants will learn about courtroom design, technology utilization, security protocols, and procedural fairness considerations to create an inclusive and efficient courtroom environment. A party can ask for almost anything by way of a motion. We’ll look at the full range of available motions at every stage of a civil case, with particular emphasis on dispositive motions. How are the facts supporting or opposing the motion established and considered? Along the way there will be some practical tips for how to approach particular motions and a practice scenario or two. We will also explore when a hearing is or is not required on a motion. Our focus will be on motions commonly arising in circuit courts, but all are welcome! Coordinator: Hon. Lawrence Fletcher-Hill THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 Civil and Criminal Jury Management 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This course will cover everything you need to know about jury selection and jury management in both criminal and civil cases. Judges will be provided with standard voir dire questions, tips on how to pick a jury quickly, how to handle problem jurors, and how to deal with juror questions and concerns. Coordinator: Hon. Stacy McCormack TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 Criminal Impact Cases 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. An ageless classic: This course identifies and analyzes the most important appellate criminal cases decided in the preceding year.
