OCTOBER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26 Another Social Dilemma: Evidence in Delinquency Matters 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31 OFF-SITE: BALTIMORE Historical Trials VIII: Galileo, Scopes, & Dover 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. “Does the earth revolve around the Sun? Do species develop through natural selection? Is intelligent design a valid scientific theory or is it religion disguised as science? Through the centuries people have resorted to the law to resolve controversies in the domain of religion, science, and philosophy. This program will explore three of these cases to identify the social, political, religious, and scientific aspects of the controversies. Why was Galileo prosecuted when Copernicus’s theory was widely accepted in the Church? How did a trial of a young schoolteacher in rural Tennessee draw two of the greatest liberal leaders of the early 20th century into a legendary courtroom confrontation? (State of Tennessee v. Thomas Scopes) How did a federal judge in the middle district of Pennsylvania come to decide whether intelligent design is valid science? (Kitzmiller v. Dover, (M.D Pennsylvania, 2005)). This course will review new developments (case law, statutory, and technology) that affect evidence issues in Juvenile delinquency matters, recurring issues that may present difficulties in resolution, and practical considerations in handling evidence issues in the courtroom.
