THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12 It Takes a Village - Complex Parenting Cases 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24 Opinion Writing for Trial Judges 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Circuit Court judges often rule from the bench, but there are times when a written opinion is desirable and/or necessary. Perhaps you have heard a complex marital property case, an attorney grievance trial, a post conviction matter, a declaratory judgment case, or some other complex matter. You have taken the case under advisement and now you must draft a written opinion, to include your fact findings and legal rulings. Our experienced faculty will focus on these types of cases and give you a framework for making this task easier for you

This interactive program will introduce you to the village of court-appointed professionals who work with families in complex parenting cases (parenting time and legal decision making). We’ll take a closer look at their roles, testing and types of reports. We’ll make sense of their reports and explore their common evidentiary issues. Explore whether and when to grow the village with appointed professionals or services. And without them, whether and how to hear from children. Coordinator/Faculty: P. Lindsay Parvis, Esq. Faculty: Magistrate Joanie B. Raymond; Syretta R. James, Ph.D.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17 OFF-SITE: WYE MILLS General Jury Management 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Each jury trial is distinct and presents distinct challenges to the trial judge. Jury management can present surprising, unanticipated challenges that leave the presiding judge little if any time to fully consider an appropriate response. In the midst of trial, such challenges may go unrecognized and therefore unaddressed. This course will consider some of those potential situations and identify both their ramifications and creative, innovative approaches for dealing with them. Coordinator/Faculty: Judge Robert K. Taylor, Jr. Faculty : TBD
