THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 Impaired and Distracted Driving 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

This course will focus on the impact of drugs and the combination of drugs and alcohol on impaired driving, It will also provide judges with best practices on pre-trial assessment, evaluation and conditions to be placed on impaired driving defendants prior to trial. Data driven best practices in sentencing will also be presented. Finally, current information and statistics on distracted driving will be addressed. Coordinator/Faculty: Judge Marc G. An old but relevant favorite: A trio of appellate judges catch you up on recent, important civil cases from the Court of Appeals and Court of Special Appeals. We’ve all been there. An inartful evidence objection is made following an equally inartful witness examination. You make your ruling and hope you understood what the heck the issue was. This course will examine commonly confused and misapplied evidence rules to ensure that you are well-prepared to make informed, clear rulings and won’t fall victim to muddled lawyering. Fletcher-Hill SEPTEMBER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8 Traffic Jam 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Don’t let traffic court jam you up. Learn how to weave and juggle through a packed courtroom, stacks of docket sheets, and the foreign language of the MVA computer system. This class will provide interactive hands-on learning of the mechanics of all things traffic related. We will also explore provisional licenses and CDLs. We will even take a turn down the road of substantive law and discuss the common legal issues presented in traffic court. This course will review new developments (case law, statutory, technological) that affect evidence issues in criminal trials, recurring issues that present difficulties in resolution, and practical considerations in handling of evidence issues in the courtroom.
