2021 Judicial Conference Program
Magistrate Annual Educational Conference Work Group • Planned for the third annual Magistrates Conference which was cancelled due to the pandemic. Planned theme was “Communication.” Plans will be carried over for the 2022 conference scheduled for September 30, 2021. Working to expand the conference to include a networking event the evening before the conference. Goals and Initiatives for the Upcoming Year • Continue working on a program for new magistrates, identifying best practices for newly appointed magistrates. • Finalize course descriptions and designate coordinators and faculty for the identified courses. • Design magistrate-specific training and other materials to be offered through the Digital Library. • Finalize the “Phone-a-Friend” resource list. • Develop plan for additional outreach to magistrates to enhance and encourage greater peer-to-peer communication and support. • Finalize and update the Magistrates’ Directory. • Recruited two new mentors. • Matched 20 new trial judges. • Updated the mentor and mentee manuals for 2020. • Reviewed submitted mentor and mentee contact forms to gauge and assess mentoring process. • Began the development of the Peer-to-Peer Mentor program for experienced judges. • Began reviewing possible training needs for identified mentors for the Peer-to-Peer • Mentor program for experienced judges. Goals and Initiatives for the Upcoming Year • Continue ongoing recruitment strategies to increase the number of new mentors.
• Continue to develop and finalize the Peer-To-Peer Mentor program for experienced judges. • Design an adequate virtual training plan for identified Mentors for the new Peer-to- Peer Mentor program.
Professional Development Subcommittee • Supported 138 courses in 2020, an 11% increase over 2019.
• Conducted 73 webinars, a 192% increase over 2019. • Conducted 12 online courses, consistent with 2019. • Number of attendees: 1,078 face-to-face courses, 3,368 webinar courses, 438 online courses. • Number of seat hours in 2020: 11,216 • Developed ten new and revamped courses including Conducting Meetings in Person or Online, Dealing with Change, GoTo Webinars: Achieve Self-Sufficiency in the Operation and Facilitation of Webinars, Habits for Success, HR Series: FMLA, Mindfulness, Positivity in the Workplace, Preserving Your Mental Health During a Crisis, Telephone Techniques, Teleworking Tips & Tools, and Time Management While Working from Home. • Conducted two open forum discussion groups on Staying Flexible in Changing Times and Successful Telework. • Supported the launch of Judicial Assistant CORE in March 2020. • Launched Can I Help You? Distinguishing Legal Advice from Legal Information to Better Serve the Public a self-paced distance learning course, developed in collaboration with Access to Justice.
