SEPTEMBER WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 Ethical Issues for Orphans’ Court Judges 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. On and off the bench, Orphans’ Court judges encounter ethical issues on a regular basis. Join our distinguished faculty for an updated and informed look at the Code of Judicial Conduct and judicial discipline process as pertains to the Orphans’ Court judge. We will explore a variety of ethical issues faced by judges in Maryland and nationally, including topics such as courtroom demeanor, use of social media and other online platforms, and political activity. Coordinator: Hon. Anne Albright OCTOBER TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6 Foundations of Criminal Judging 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This course is for judges who: (A) are in their first few years as judges; and (B) did not have any significant experience in criminal law before becoming judges. The goal of the course is to present an overview of the criminal justice process from a judge’s perspective. It will not provide an in-depth analysis of specific issues, but rather will acquaint judges with the issues that arise most frequently in criminal cases in both the district and the circuit courts. The topics to be covered include ruling on warrant requests, managing discovery disputes, addressing pretrial motions, and selecting a jury. Learners will also discuss different ways of setting up chambers and courtroom processes to handle criminal cases efficiently. THURSDAY, AUGUST 20 FIELD TRIP: JESSUP Within the Walls — An Insider’s View of MCIW 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. What happens when the sentenced defendant is led from your courtroom? What is the DOC really like inside the walls? How much of your sentence will the defendant actually spend incarcerated? What services are available to the incarcerated individuals? This innovative, interactive course will include an insider’s tour of the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women (“MCIW”), a maximum-security correctional facility. It will also feature presentations by DPSCS leadership, discussions with parole and probation as well as case management, along with the opportunity for a discussion panel with current and former incarcerated individuals of the facility. Coordinator: Hon. James Green THURSDAY, AUGUST 27 Civil & Criminal Jury Management 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. This course will cover everything you need to know about jury selection and jury management in both criminal and civil cases. Judges will be provided with standard voir dire questions, tips on how to pick a jury quickly, how to handle problem jurors, and how to deal with juror questions and concerns. Coordinators: Hon.
