JULY THURSDAY, JULY 20 OFF-SITE: TBD Juvenile Facility Tour: Victor Cullen Center 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. What are the Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) facilities that provide secure detention to youth detained under CJP Title 3-8A like? How do they respond to and serve the children in their care, especially when the children may have a short length of stay? How do they evaluate education needs and provide schooling? What kinds of medical and counseling services are available? How does a program care for the particular needs of young women entering the juvenile justice system? This program will tackle those questions and more, through a tour of the Victor Cullen Center, a secure detention facility. Then, in the “let’s discuss” portion of the program DJS ad facility staff will address detention programming, services, family contacts, etc. All questions and topics will be welcome for discussion. Coordinator/Faculty: Sarah Kaplan & Abigail Hill Faculty: James Johnston, Esq., Kara Aaneson, LGSW TUESDAY, JULY 25 Truancy: Trends, Best Practices, & Addressing school attendance is an ongoing issue that affects the entire community. Some jurisdictions have established Problem-Solving Truancy Courts to combat truancy. Learn from key players in Maryland jurisdictions on what they are doing and what they have learned along the way. You will walk away with information on the impact of truancy and chronic absenteeism in our communities, including how truancy is intertwined with crime and mental health in the community. You will also learn about ways to collaborate with community and school partners to begin establishing Problem Solving Truancy Courts and other successful attendance improvement efforts in your jurisdictions. AUGUST THURSDAY, AUGUST 17 OFF-SITE: JESSUP Judges, Sentencing, & Prisons 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

“From this point forth, we shall be leaving the firm foundation of fact and journeying together through the murky marshes of memory into thickets of wildest guesswork.” If those words of Professor Albus Dumbledore reflect how you sometimes feel when you impose a sentence of incarceration, this is the course for you. What happens when the sentenced defendant is led from your courtroom? What is prison really like on the inside? How much of your sentence will the defendant actually spend incarcerated? What services are available to incarcerated individuals? This innovative, interactive course will include an insider’s tour of the Jessup Correctional Institution, a maximum-security correctional facility. It will also feature addresses by and discussions with corrections officials and service providers, along with the opportunity for a peer-to-peer and a possible discussion panel with current inmates of the facility.
