PURPOSE

The Senior Judges Committee advises the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and the Judicial Council on matters relevant to retired/recalled judges.

Senior Judges Award Work Group Judicial Conference Work Group Judicial Conference Video Script Work Group

(Reporting Period – October 1, 2019 – September 30, 2020)

The Senior Judges Committee, recognizing that senior judges perform a vital service to the Judiciary, directs its attention to making recalled service effective and efficient in light of procedures and technology now being utilized within the Judiciary. At present, there are 13 members of the committee, including senior judges representing all four levels of court as well as administrators from both the Circuit and District Courts. The committee functions for the most part as a committee of the whole, with its members serving on other Judiciary organizations or committees and reporting to this committee. The committee met two times during the reporting period. The committee has directed its efforts and attention to: • Informing senior judges on MDEC trainings and happenings. • Informing senior judges on retirement issues and work-life balance. • Maintaining the committee’s list serve to communicate with senior judges, notifying members of new and newsworthy events, and sending the Hot Topics newsletter. Newsletters are sent out 3-4 times per year, emphasizing technological changes and communications tools being utilized by the Judiciary that affect senior judges. • Awarding the Annual Senior Judges Award to the Honorable Neil Axel. GOALS/INITIATIVES FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR • Continuing to provide input on judiciary, legislative, and other related matters impacting senior judges. • Maintaining the Hot Topics newsletter and the Committee’s SharePoint website and Maryland Judiciary webpage. • Reviewing and evaluating senior judges’ access to Judicial College courses. • Providing feedback to the administration based on the needs and expectations of Senior Judges in the local jurisdictions in which they serve.
